Kitchen hood: how to choose the right ventilation?

Essential in your kitchen, a good kitchen hood helps eliminate bad cooking odors, but also purifies the air you breathe. So choose it carefully! You don’t know much about it? No worries, we’ll take stock.

Two extractor hood systems to know: evacuation and recycling

In terms of kitchen ventilation, there are two modes of operation: what is called external exhaust, and recycling. In any case, an extractor hood is essential above the cooking area. Do you live in a house? You can opt for an exterior exhaust hood, which will direct the fumes outside by installing a duct. This system is recognized for its high performance and excellent air flow. Do you live in an apartment? You will opt more for a recycling hood. The device is equipped with carbon filters which filter and deodorize the air, before it exits out the sides. Easier to install, you will however need to remember to change the filters regularly so that it remains effective.

Which hood model to choose?

Are you sensitive to the harmony of your kitchen? There are very discreet built-in hoods: the retractable hood is installed in a piece of furniture. The cap (or visor) hood is easily placed under a storage unit. The drawer hood is placed, as its name suggests, in a drawer.

You can also choose a decorative wall hood, which offers several very contemporary styles, colors and designs, to be fixed directly to the wall. Another possible choice: the telescopic hood, directly integrated into your island, it deploys when you need it. Finally, the latest addition, the hood integrated directly “on” the hob (for example in our Vogue kitchen) is almost no longer noticeable and has the advantage of sucking up the cooking vapors directly at the source. Discreet and efficient.

The hood with a central island, a special case

Have you chosen a central island ? In this case, you will probably choose a suspended hood installed directly on the ceiling, above your island. This is by far the most decorative hood. Coordinated with the oven and the hob, it is available in a wide range of shapes (circular, rectangular, trapezoidal, curved, cubic, etc.), colors and materials (stainless steel, aluminum, glass, etc.).

Please note, however: in all cases, for an open kitchen , you will need to choose an air flow rate greater than the calculation given above, in terms of space.

Find the right size

The right size for your hood is one that is as wide as your hob , or even wider. This is how it will work best and will clean the air.

There are hoods 60, 90 and 120 cm wide. Do you have a cooking range? It is also possible to install two hoods, side by side.
